Creating A Bootable Ghost Cd
Hello, I need some assistance on this question as soon as possible. I need to take some screenshots of Norton Ghost 8.3 boot CD in true DOS mode, so I need to have an application like Screen Thief in on the boot CD too, as well as write capabilities (to either USB Flash Drive, C drive or a blank CD - no floppy drive on system), so that I can write out the screen shots to a storage area. I am very flexible, but just want the basic (steps 1-5) bare bones approach as I have been trying to modify Barts Corpmb iso to make a simple workable bootable CD solution that writes out to any location (except a floppy drive). Screen Thief automatically trys to save each screen shot (as a BMP) to memory I believe. I was able to modify Barts Corpmd cd to load Screen Thief and Ghost 8.3, but I cannot get it to write out the screen shots. I am at a loss.
I am looking for the bare bones basic approach as follows: 1. Insert CD and turn on computer. CD boots up to menu or prompt. Screen Thief (MS DOS Screen Capture utility) is started.

Norton Ghost 8.3 (ghost.exe) is started and user has ability to capture and save out screen shots as they back up and/or restore from CD/DVD. I am able to load both Screen Thief (st.exe) and Norton Ghost 8.3 (ghost.exe) on to a bootable CD, just am unable to save any of the captures (not even to memory). Any assistance that can be provided in the number of files needed on the bootable CD (i.e.

But is this for documentation or tutorial, or for the users benifit? If you're doing documentation/tutorials etc. The best method I've found for taking Dos Screen shots is using Virtual PC, it's cheap and you can than even use Alt-Print Screen to capture the window from the Dos Screen to Ghost Screen. If this is for users, than I'd highly recommend BartsPE or Microsofts Windows PE than you don't have to worry about Dos at all it's all 32bit, you can than load USB drives etc. To save your data, the skys your limit.

My task is to create some user documentation with screen captures from Norton Ghost 8.3. I need to capture ALL THE SCREEN SHOTS from start to finish, as I create a backup image and as I restore from that backup image. Digital photos of the actual screen will not do. I need the actual screenshots. I have heard of Integrated Lights Out (ILO), but was under the impression that this is a proprietary hardware technology from HP (Compaq) and not universal to every computer or server.
It would be nice to have, but I probably won't be able to get it for my task. I have been trying to modify Bart's Corpmb disk and Hiren's disk, so that I can use that bootable CD to go through a backup and restore sequence - all the while taking screen shots all the way through.
But, I have not been able to get it to work. I know a bit about DOS, but would need to know what to put in the config.sys, autoexec.bat and/or autorun.bat. Overall, I am looking for the easiest solution available. The Virtual PC/ Virtual Server concept sounds interesting, but the end user of my documentation will be creating Norton Ghost 8.3 boot CDs in windows first and then booting off that CD (in the event of a drive failure) and building a new drive with a pre-made image. With that said, I think a bootable CD would be the best option. So, to that end, I used the Norton Ghost 8.3 boot wizard to create a bootable CD.
This created an ISO file. Now I am trying to go into the iso file and add Screen Thief (ST.exe) as well as the ability to write out the captured screenshots to memory and to either a USB Flash Drive, a place on the hard drive (C Drive) or a blank CD (when prompted). I am using Screen Thief version 2.01. Should I continue to try to modify the GHBOOT iso image that was created by Ghost 8.3 or should I try to modify Bart's Corpmb or Hiren's CD, using my licensed copy of Norton Ghost 8.3? Any assistance in resolving this issue is very much appreciated. I need to find a quick and easy solution as soon as possible. Does either application allow you to capture screen shots from the BIOS boot up on forward? Do you have to set the BIOS on the target computer to boot up off the network card first and then log into the target computer with a Virtual PC / VMWare client? I am very much interested in learning more about Virtual PC / VMWare. Hi Jim I don't know too much about VMWare however I've used Vitrual PC quite bit for testing purposes, tutorials etc. When you setup VirtualPC it's just like a normal computer, with CD drive, floppy, nic, audio etc. Ok here's the cool thing rather than save your ISO to CD you can use VirtualPC to capture the ISO as a CD so when it starts you get the bios screen, it than loads the ISO just like your CD, you can take snapshots anywhere you like as it's running on your desktop in a Window. If you prefer to use CD than you can tell capture your Physical CD Rom drive and it will read directly from your Physical HardDrive.
I prefer the ISO because well it's faster and you can create fixes on the spot rather than burning a CD finding an issue, fixing the issue, creating another ISO and burning that to CD. Hello Matrixnz, Yes, I am intrigued by Virtual PC, but will probably use it for other projects in the future. Would I have to install Virtual Server on the targeted PC? If yes, then I guess I would need IIS and anything else required for Virtual Server to work and then install and run Virtual PC from a remote PC.
Is this the process? It this similar to Exceed Hummingbird? Getting back to my question. I really want to closely mirror the process of a technician finding the bad drive, rebooting the server with Ghost 8.3 bootable CD, which was initially created and stored away for future use. I just need to have a 'customized' version of this same CD, so that I can capture screen shots while using the CD. The Virtual PC approach has some strong advantages, but it will not be used by the customer and I want to try to simulate this process, preferably with a special boot CD, so that I can step out through this processs and take first hand screenshots - as if I was actually imaging a new drive (after a drive failure) using Ghost. Back to the bootable Ghost CD in DOS: Do you have any suggestions on how to embed Screen Thief into a ISO created by the Norton Ghost 8.3 wizard?

The wizard creates an iso, which is comprised of: GHBOOT.ISO BOOTCAT.BIN (2.00 KB) OSBOOT.IMG (23.50MB) This file breaks down into: Ghost (folder with ghost.exe inside) autoexec.bat command.com ibmbio.com ibmdos.com aspi2dos.sys aspi4dos.sys aspi8dos.sys aspi8u2.sys config.sys Now, can I add Screen Thief here at this level and have it work? If so, what do I have add to make it work? Do I have to modify the autoexec.bat and config.sys?
I have tried several approaches and I if I see ST when I boot up the CD, then it generates an error after I execute it and attempt to take screen captures. The error is within the application stating that it cannot save out a screen shot. I have also seen where it will not even see ST.exe when I boot up this CD. This is after building and re-building and re-building the ISO over and over again on a rewritable CD. I have no problem appending other drivers to this ISO, I just need to know which ones to have. By the way, the autoexec.bat reads as follows: @echo off SET TZ=GHO+05:00 if exist MOUSE.COM MOUSE.COM echo Loading. CD GHOST GHOST.EXE -force1394 Do I incorporate ST.exe (ST = Screen Thief screen capture utility) in the commands shown above?
And the config.sys files reads as follows: DEVICE = aspi2dos.sys DEVICE = aspi8dos.sys DEVICE = aspi4dos.sys DEVICE = aspi8u2.sys LASTDRIVE = Z Could I modify this config file so that it can recognize and save out to the 'C' drive, USB Flash Drive or prompt user to insert blank CD - so as to copy off the.BMPs (screen captures)? Hi Jim No sorry I can't help with the Dos, as For Soft above said trying to get USB to recognise the information would be very difficult if not impossible. Heres some screen shots I did with VirtualPC took me about 5 mins most of that trying to find my Ghost Boot CD =) Now regards your questions about Virtual PC actually you can run this on your own desktop from within Windows, that's how I took the shots in my PDF, also I just checked and see that both Virtual Server and Virtual PC is now FREE. There is yet another way of doing your task.
It is possible to emulate a HDD boot with a CD. You can do all the documentation tasks runing the system from DOS HDD. It is easier to create a set of utilities that way, because you can change the contents and configuration of the set without other computer involved. Then, when everything is ready, you can make a bootable image of your HDD on a CD. There is more to it. You can use a bootable USB hdd.
The BIOS will do the whole USB support, so you will not have to play with USB drivers. You will be able to save the image direcly to the USB HDD without any USB drivers, at all. When the whole automation set is done, you will be able to transfer the whole HDD contents to a bootable CD using HDD emulation, instead of the most popular floppy disk emulation. I mentioned earlier that the ISO file generated by Symantec Ghost 8.3 (via the boot cd wizard) is comprised of: GHBOOT.ISO BOOTCAT.BIN OSBOOT.IMG Well there is another file (when burning a 'Bootable CD' in Nero which appears hidden) that is burned to the CD. And it does make a difference if you decide to include that in the CD burn or not. Hello Matrixnz, Thanks for the offer on the floppy image, but I finally got it to work.
Well I should say that I got the Hiren's CD to work and that has Ghost packed on the CD. So I just injected my licensed version of Ghost on that ISO and believe it or not it is working in Virtual PC. Each executable on the Hiren CD is saved as a compressed.UHA file.
But the bottom line is that I found something that works. Still, I would like to have a bootable ghost CD that will work and allow me to access USB, C Drive and more. Then at any moment, I can press the hot keys and take the screen shots. One last question on Virtual PC. How do I go about resizing it to a custom width? If I am running full screen over my Windows XP machine, that my print screen command - to take a screenshot (this time using Snagit) does not work?

Hi Jim Cheers for that, regards the screen resolution you'll probably find that it's better to run in the default window, rather than running it at full screen as it doesn' make a difference to your resolution as such, you'll also find that when you are in full screen you're no longer in your Operating System Window, so it doesn't recognise any commands from the Windows XP OS. Now I don't know if you've ever heard of program called Wink, but it's one of the best programs for creating tutorials + its free. The brilliant thing about this is you can create an interactive movie i.e.
Exe or swf movie, by letting it follow your screen movements and capturing it. The first PDF I made Ghost.PDF was made with Wink, basically it uses screen capture to make the movie, it has options to add pointers, stickies to each of your images, it also has the capability of creating PDFs from your movie line. Now how it captures the screen shots is by key on your keyboard, timeline i.e. It takes a snapshot every 4 seconds or so or using mouse, or keyboard strokes, so each time you type on the keyboard it takes a snapshot.
Anyway I encourage you to look at it, even if it's just for the screen capture ability, because once you've completed you can copy the snapshot frames into word, imaging program etc. Hey thanks Matrixnz, You should send me an email address, so that I can pass some links back and forth to you. I have not heard of Wink, but I do have a licensed copy of Captivate at work and have used that to process movies. Captivate works with a Knowledge Object plugin, which will allow you to bring your Captivate movie into Authorware - for CBT development.
I just read the Virtual PC help file and it says: 'You can resize windows only if Virtual Machine Additions is installed and the virtual machine is not running or in a saved state.' Do you have a good link for hte Virtual Machine Additions? Does it matter if the additions are for Virtual Server and not Virtual PC? Hi Jim Yeah sure my email is: matrixnz at hotmail.com Captivate sounds very similar to Wink, don't know if Captivate has a Window select option, but in Wink you can select parts of a Window for e.g. The outer edge of the window or the inner edge, I used the inner edge to capture the Dos screen in my PDF. The Virtual Machine Additons, are part of VirtualPC however, you can only install them when a 32bit OS is available, i.e. It won't install under dos. Once you have an OS on your machine, like Windows XP for e.g. If you click Action - Install or Update Virtual Machine Addons, than restart your machine, you'll find that when it starts if you look at CD that it's captured the VirtualMachineAdditions.is o than once the OS loads it installs them, you can than see them under add/remove programs to remove if you wish. After that you can resize your window + you don't have to keep clicking the Right Alt Key to move from your Virtual Machine back to your Desktop.

We’re going to use a few tools specifically designed which will make the process really easy. First of all, you’re going to need Format USB, which you can get. Second, we’ll be getting USBOOT Norton Ghost from. Get the files from the archive in the usual manner and place the folders in a convenient space where you can easily access them.
Now open Format USB by right clicking and selecting ” Run as administrator “, which may require you to input your password. Now let me get you a few screen caps to get started.
After opening the Format USB tool select FAT32 format, check format device, also check create a DOS start up disk and select from the browser the USB Norton Ghost ” Boot ” folder.
